Marine invertebrates for reef tanks

Marine invertebrates include animals with very different roles and diets. Compare a surface-grazing snail, a scavenging hermit crab, a burrowing shrimp, and a specialist feeder by what each needs to eat and where it lives. The right choice starts with a feeding and habitat plan.

An invertebrate category is not a guarantee that every animal is safe with every reef inhabitant. Review predatory fish, existing shrimp, delicate corals, available shelter, and the behaviour of the proposed species. For crabs and shrimp, leave secure retreats where they can shelter while their new exoskeleton hardens after a moult.

Check the individual product description and confirm any uncertain identification before purchase. Match cleanup-crew numbers to the food available, and plan supplemental feeding where appropriate. When requesting advice, include the problem you want to address, your aquarium size, the animals already present, and any treatments being used in the system.
