Coral Banded Shrimp

The Coral Banded Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) has red-and-white bands, long white antennae, and prominent front claws. It often occupies a cave or crevice, sometimes hanging beneath an overhang with its antennae extending into view.

Give this shrimp a sheltered territory with room for its extended appendages. It can be aggressive toward other Coral Banded Shrimp and smaller shrimp species. Keep a single individual unless a genuine compatible pair has been established; two animals bought together are not automatically a pair.

Offer suitable frozen or flaked marine foods and observe feeding near its shelter. The shrimp may hide around a moult, so avoid disturbing its retreat unnecessarily. Check existing shrimp and fish before adding it, and avoid copper-based treatments in the invertebrate aquarium.
