Aquarium substrate and reef rock

Substrate and rock shape the aquarium's habitat as well as its appearance. Choose them for the water chemistry, livestock and maintenance plan. A planted freshwater substrate, marine sand and decorative gravel can have different mineral properties and preparation instructions, even when their colors look similar.

Consider grain size alongside flow and animal behavior. Fine sand moves more easily in strong currents, while larger grains leave wider spaces where debris can settle. Plan depth for the intended planting or burrowing needs and calculate quantity from the aquarium footprint.

Build rockwork with stable contact points, useful shelter and open routes for circulation and cleaning. Follow the product's rinsing or preparation guidance; live and dry materials should not automatically receive the same treatment. Keep access to the glass and equipment in mind as the layout takes shape.
