Zebra Moray Eel

The Zebra Moray Eel, Gymnomuraena zebra, carries bold pale bands across a dark body. It can approach 1.5 metres in length, so a small specimen still calls for substantial permanent housing and a carefully planned adult retreat.

Build large, secure caves with rockwork that cannot shift when the eel moves through it. Close and secure all potential escape routes, including openings around plumbing. Leave enough room for the full animal to rest inside shelter and maintain filtration suitable for its heavy meals.

Offer varied crustacean and other appropriate marine meaty foods with a long feeding tool. Its rounded crushing teeth suit hard-bodied prey, making ornamental crustaceans unsuitable companions. It is often less troublesome with larger fish than many morays, but should never be hand-fed or treated as incapable of biting.
