Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse

The Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse, Wetmorella nigropinnata, is a small, secretive reef hunter. Its reddish body is crossed by pale yellow bands, and dark eyespots appear on the fins.

Choose an established aquarium with intricate rockwork, small caves and crevices. This fish often remains close to cover rather than displaying constantly in open water. Calm tankmates are particularly important: persistent disturbance can keep it hidden and make feeding difficult. Keep a secure aquarium cover in place.

Offer small meaty foods several times daily and verify that they reach the wrasse. Newly introduced individuals may need suitable live foods to encourage feeding before accepting prepared alternatives. Its search for tiny invertebrate prey makes a mature rock environment useful, but natural foraging should be supported by a dependable feeding routine.
