The White Spine Tang, Acanthurus leucocheilus, changes appearance as it matures. Juveniles show a grey-blue body and yellow tail, while larger fish develop a darker body and conspicuous pale lips. The light tail-spine area helps explain its common name. Recorded size reaches 48 cm measured to the tail base, underscoring the need for a very large permanent aquarium.

Plan broad swimming routes and rock surfaces for grazing in an aquarium chosen for the adult fish. Similar Acanthurus tangs can provoke territorial disputes, so an existing surgeonfish collection requires careful compatibility planning. The sharp spines beside the tail also need care during transfers.

Provide marine algae and seaweed regularly, with suitable prepared foods and meaty items for variety. Ensure it can reach its own grazing food without continually challenging another tang. Feeding access and room to move matter throughout growth, rather than only when a small fish is first introduced.
