Whipfin Fairy Wrasse

The Whipfin Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus filamentosus, is named for the extended dorsal fin developed by males. Red, pale and yellow tones vary with maturity, sex and display behaviour, so the conspicuous adult male form is not a promise for every specimen.

This active wrasse needs swimming room and rocky retreats within a securely covered aquarium. It may dominate other fairy or flasher wrasses, especially in confined spaces. Consider their temperament and available escape routes before building a mixed wrasse collection.

Feed small marine meaty foods, such as mysis and enriched brine shrimp, alongside suitable prepared diets. Observe quieter fish as carefully as the Whipfin at mealtimes: a bold feeder can receive ample food while a less assertive companion steadily loses condition.
