Volitans Lionfish

The Volitans Lionfish, Pterois volitans, has broad, radiating fins and pale bands alternating with red-brown or dark markings. It is a large predator that can reach roughly 35 cm, so its adult spread and feeding behaviour need to guide aquarium selection.

Use stable rockwork with spacious overhangs and shelter. Small fish and crustaceans are prey, while fin-nipping companions can injure the lionfish. Maintain filtration suited to meaty meals and avoid crowding the areas it uses for resting.

Its dorsal spines are venomous. Arrange feeding, cleaning and transfers to avoid contact, even when the fish appears motionless. Offer varied marine meaty foods in controlled portions and confirm the individual's feeding response; an impressive appetite is not a reason to provide food continually.
