Vampire Tang

The Vampire Tang, Acanthurus tennentii, is also known as the Lieutenant or Doubleband Tang. The paired dark markings behind its eye become prominent as it matures, while its overall colour can change from juvenile gold tones toward olive, grey or brown.

Adults can reach about 31 cm, calling for substantial swimming space and established rockwork for grazing. Similar surgeonfish can provoke aggression, so plan introductions around territory and available room. The sharp tail spines require care when moving the fish or working close to it.

Offer algae and seaweed regularly, together with suitable prepared and marine meaty foods for variety. Make grazing food available where the tang can feed without repeatedly confronting a rival. Its changing juvenile appearance should be considered alongside adult size when choosing this fish.
