Tasseled Filefish

The Tasseled Filefish, Chaetodermis penicilligerus, is also known as the Leafy Filefish. Fringed skin and a striped, camouflaged body create its unusual outline. It can grow to around 30 cm, so its permanent aquarium needs to accommodate a broad-bodied adult.

Provide a spacious display with rock shelter and areas of visual cover. Compatible fish should leave it able to approach food without persistent harassment. Related filefish may create territorial problems. This species is unsuitable for a typical coral reef aquarium, despite its unhurried movements.

Offer at least three small meals daily of varied marine foods, including suitable chopped shrimp, squid or clam alongside algae-containing preparations. Check that food is swallowed rather than merely investigated. A deliberate feeding routine and accessible retreat are especially useful while a newly introduced filefish settles in.
