Surge Damsel

The Surge Damsel, Chrysiptera brownriggii, is a colourful reef fish whose territorial behaviour deserves as much attention as its blue and yellow markings. It is one of the more assertive damselfish choices and can become a poor neighbour for quiet community species.

Design the aquarium with substantial rock cover and distinct territories, then assess whether existing fish can withstand persistent confrontation. A shy feeder or another fish seeking the same shelter may lose access to both food and refuge. Small size alone does not make this damsel suitable for a crowded display.

Offer a mixed marine diet, combining small meaty foods with appropriate algae-containing preparations. Monitor behaviour as it settles in and grows; compatibility observed immediately after introduction may change once the fish establishes ownership of its surroundings.
