Striped Soapfish

The Striped Soapfish, Grammistes sexlineatus, is a predatory reef fish with pale markings on a dark body. The pattern changes as it grows, with long juvenile stripes becoming more broken in larger fish.

Provide a spacious, mature aquarium with substantial caves and filtration capable of handling a predator's meals. Small fish and crustaceans can be swallowed, so companions must be chosen around adult feeding behaviour. Its habit of hiding should not be mistaken for harmlessness.

Soapfish can release a toxic skin secretion when severely stressed, putting other aquarium inhabitants at risk. Avoid harassment and rough handling, and consider a dedicated setup when assessing that risk. Offer varied marine meaty foods in controlled portions and confirm feeding before purchase; a sheltered resting place should remain available throughout acclimation.
