Shrimp Fish

The Shrimp Fish, Aeoliscus strigatus, is an unusual marine fish that swims with its head pointing downward. Its thin body and dark lengthwise stripe help it blend among structured reef and vegetated habitats while searching for small prey.

Plan a peaceful specialist aquarium with shelter, a sand bed and suitable macroalgae or other cover. Shrimpfish are social, so provide room and feeding capacity for a compatible group rather than treating one as an incidental addition to a busy fish collection.

Dependable access to tiny live foods is the main commitment. Prepare suitable live marine prey before purchase and confirm any acceptance of frozen alternatives instead of assuming it. Faster tankmates can intercept food, leaving these shy fish underfed even when meals are offered regularly. Observe each individual closely during feeding.
