Segmented Blenny

The Segmented Blenny, Salarias segmentatus, has a brown to reddish body broken by pale bars and small light spots on the head. It typically stays close to rock surfaces, moving between grazing patches, perches and shelter.

An established aquarium with natural algae growth provides both feeding opportunities and places to explore. Include narrow retreats and secure the cover: a bottom-associated lifestyle does not prevent a blenny from jumping. Another algae blenny may be viewed as a competitor for the same territory.

Supplement natural grazing with suitable algae-based preparations and check that the fish actually accepts them. A clean-looking aquarium may offer little food even when there is plenty of rock. Judge nutrition by the blenny's condition and feeding behaviour, rather than expecting it to live indefinitely on nuisance algae.
