Sargassum Frogfish

The Sargassum Frogfish, Histrio histrio, is an ambush predator associated with floating seaweed. Its irregular outline and variable colour help it blend into its surroundings; camouflage can make a resting fish surprisingly difficult to locate.

A dedicated aquarium is the clearest way to manage its unusual feeding and compatibility needs. Provide stable resting structures and shelter. This frogfish can swallow unexpectedly large prey, including other frogfish, so apparent similarities in fish size do not establish a safe pairing.

Confirm the individual fish's feeding response before purchase and be prepared to supply suitable live marine prey if required. Feed deliberately and avoid overfeeding. Small community fish and ornamental shrimp are food candidates, making this a specialist predator display rather than an addition chosen simply for its unusual appearance.
