Rooted Halimeda

Rooted Halimeda is a green, segmented macroalga with a calcium-containing structure and a sand-anchoring holdfast. Its upright, branching form brings a different texture to marine plantings than soft, flowing red algae or creeping Caulerpa.

Bury the holdfast gently in suitable fine substrate while leaving the green growth exposed. Provide moderate to strong reef-capable lighting and enough circulation to prevent debris accumulating between the segments. A coarse rubble bottom is less suitable for supporting this rooted form.

Maintain calcium and alkalinity as well as a steady nutrient supply. Halimeda generally grows more slowly than macroalgae chosen primarily for rapid nutrient export, and it does not respond well to constant clipping. Give the plant time to establish and use its structured growth as a long-term element of the aquascape.
