Ring Tail Tang

Ring Tail Tang is a large surgeonfish commitment, even when offered as a juvenile. The Acanthurus species sold under this name are reported to approach 45 cm (18 inches), so plan adult swimming room before purchase. Arrange rockwork for grazing and shelter without narrowing the routes around the aquarium.

Provide a varied marine diet with regular algae-based foods alongside suitable meaty preparations. An established grazing surface is useful, but it does not replace deliberate feeding and observation of body condition. Maintain enough filtration for the feeding and waste output of a large active fish.

Other tangs, particularly similar-looking ones, may provoke territorial behaviour. Monitor introductions and allow each fish access to food and shelter. The sharp spines near a surgeonfish’s tail require careful handling. Confirm the species before finalizing accommodation rather than treating a tail-ring common name as a precise identification.
