Pitho Crab

The Pitho Crab moves over rockwork picking at algae with its claws. It is of interest to reefkeepers managing hair algae and larger forms such as bubble algae, but its appetite also matters when ornamental macroalgae are part of the display.

Allow sheltered rock surfaces and supply suitable marine algae when natural grazing declines. Observe what the crab actually eats in your aquarium; adding a grazer does not guarantee removal of a particular infestation or eliminate the need for nutrient management.

Compatibility deserves attention. Pitho crabs have been reported picking at soft corals, and the shape and size of their claws vary between sexes. Protect them from predatory fish and leave undisturbed shelter for molting. Select this crab with the whole livestock collection in mind rather than treating it as a maintenance tool.
