Panther Grouper

The Panther Grouper has a pale, spotted body, a high-backed profile and a large mouth. Its striking juvenile appearance can obscure the main husbandry issue: it grows into a very large predator requiring an appropriately large aquarium. Adults can reach 70 cm, so this is a major predator-housing commitment.

Build stable caves and sheltered areas while keeping substantial swimming room available. Strong filtration must accommodate the waste produced by a large carnivore. A secure lid and a long-term enclosure plan should be in place before the fish arrives.

Feed varied, appropriately sized marine meaty foods. Small fish and ornamental invertebrates can become prey even if the grouper appears quiet between meals. Choose tankmates that cannot be swallowed and review compatibility again as the grouper grows.
