Many Banded Pipefish

The many banded pipefish, Dunckerocampus multiannulatus, has an elongated body crossed by numerous contrasting bands. It is a specialised feeder whose quiet movements and small mouth call for more planning than simply adding another fish to a mixed reef.

Provide mature rockwork with sheltered crevices and places to forage. Offer small live crustaceans as needed and establish reliable acceptance of appropriately sized frozen foods before depending on them. Public aquarium experience includes live mysis and enriched brine shrimp, with small frozen foods providing useful variety when accepted.

Choose companions that allow repeated feeding opportunities without harassment. Protect the fish from strong exposed intakes, nipping animals and stinging hazards. Monitor its condition closely: a pipefish may appear to hunt all day while still failing to obtain enough nutrition in a competitive aquarium.
