Magnificent Rabbitfish

The magnificent rabbitfish, Siganus magnificus, has a contrasting dark-and-pale body with coloured fin edges. It can adopt a mottled appearance when resting or frightened, so its daytime pattern is not its only normal colour state. Adults can exceed 23 cm (9 inches), which needs to be reflected in the aquarium’s swimming and turning space.

Provide a spacious, established aquarium with grazing rockwork and clear swimming routes. Offer marine algae and balanced herbivore foods consistently. Natural algae growth helps occupy the fish, but its feeding plan should continue when those surfaces become clean.

Corals and other attached invertebrates may be picked at, so assess reef compatibility individually. Other rabbitfish can trigger territorial disputes. The venomous fin spines require careful handling and awareness during maintenance: give the fish space to retreat and avoid trapping it between your hand and the rockwork.
