Longnose Hawkfish

The longnose hawkfish, Oxycirrhites typus, is recognised by its extended snout and red lattice-like markings over a pale body. It surveys the aquarium from perches, moving between lookouts rather than swimming continuously in open water.

Arrange secure ledges and branching structures with nearby crevices for retreat. Offer small marine meaty foods where it can capture them easily. Include a fitted cover because hawkfish can jump, and leave enough room around its preferred lookouts for other fish to pass.

Small shrimp and very small fish can be eaten. It may also defend a territory against neighbouring fish or another hawkfish. Choose companions that are neither bite-sized nor easily intimidated, and assess the risk to ornamental crustaceans before adding it to a reef display.
