Long Nose Butterfly

A Long Nose Butterfly uses its narrow snout to inspect small spaces in the reef. Provide mature live rock with accessible crevices, sheltered retreats and clear swimming room around it. Feeding deserves special attention: a long snout does not mean that the fish can swallow large pieces of food.

Offer varied marine meaty foods in sizes the individual can actually take, and watch for swallowing rather than repeated picking and spitting. Suitable live foods may help a reluctant feeder. Peaceful companions and an established foraging habitat reduce the challenge of settling a new butterflyfish.

Check the species before purchase because the two commonly traded Forcipiger longnose butterflies differ in mouth size and feeding difficulty. Coral and other invertebrate compatibility needs careful assessment; observe any persistent picking. Another butterflyfish may also trigger territorial conflict, so a second fish needs a considered compatibility plan.
