Large aquarium driftwood can form a focal point in a freshwater aquascape while providing shaded spaces and surfaces for attached plants. Plan its position around the aquarium opening, swimming space, and access for cleaning; natural pieces vary in shape and do not share a fixed footprint.

Wood can release tannins that tint water brown. Soaking it in clean water before installation can reduce the initial release, and some pieces need time or secure weighting before remaining submerged. Do not assume a dry piece will sink immediately.

Check that the final arrangement is stable and does not trap fish in narrow gaps. A pale biofilm can develop on newly submerged wood and often attracts grazing shrimp or fish. Continue normal water testing and maintenance as the aquarium adjusts to the new hardscape.
