Japanese Red Pistol Shrimp

The Japanese Red Pistol Shrimp is a red snapping shrimp that spends much of its time around shaded rock and substrate. Its enlarged claw creates a distinctive click, while its digging can noticeably rearrange sand around the chosen retreat.

Build the rockwork on a stable support before providing loose sand and rubble for the shrimp to move. Offer small marine meaty foods close to the shelter so it receives a share without needing to cross open territory among larger fish.

Some snapping shrimp may associate with compatible gobies, but the Japanese trade name alone is not a promise of a bonded pair. Tiny ornamental shrimp can also be vulnerable. Give the animal a protected molting space, maintain consistent salinity, and avoid copper-based treatments in its aquarium.
