Hawaiian Sculptured Slipper Lobster

The Hawaiian Sculptured Slipper Lobster has a flattened, armored body and broad plate-like antennae instead of the long antennae associated with many familiar lobsters. Its textured surface helps it disappear against a rocky background.

Plan a roomy marine habitat with secure crevices and a dark retreat. Slipper lobsters shelter during the day and commonly forage at night. Their diet includes animal foods, so provide suitable marine meaty items where the lobster can find them after the lights dim.

Small mollusks and other invertebrates can become prey; the absence of oversized front claws does not make this lobster an algae-cleaning animal. Keep the rockwork stable and allow an undisturbed place for molting. This is a specialist display choice whose shelter, growth and feeding needs should shape the stocking plan.
