Harlequin Snake Eel

The harlequin snake eel, Myrichthys colubrinus, is a banded marine eel that spends considerable time concealed in the substrate. It needs a carefully prepared home that accommodates burrowing, rather than relying on rock caves alone. Reported adult length approaches 90 cm (36 inches), requiring room for a long body beneath the substrate.

Provide a deep bed of suitable sand, firmly supported rockwork and a fully secured cover. Present varied marine meaty foods with a long feeding tool near the eel's hiding place. Confirm its feeding response before purchase and continue observing meals after it moves into the aquarium.

Small crustaceans and other bite-sized residents are at risk from this predator. Avoid hand-feeding and locate the eel before disturbing the sand or rearranging décor. A hidden eel still needs enough permanent space for its full body and filtration that can manage a carnivore's feeding routine.
