Harlequin Bass

The harlequin bass, Serranus tigrinus, has an irregular pattern of dark markings over pale and yellow areas. It is a small sea bass that explores the lower parts of a rocky marine aquarium, rather than a schooling fish for open water.

Give it crevices, sheltered routes and room to move between feeding areas. Offer varied marine meaty foods in regular portions. Check the behaviour of other bottom-associated residents during feeding so that a territorial fish does not monopolise both shelter and meals.

Small shrimp and crabs can become prey. This bass may also challenge fish occupying the same part of the aquarium, despite appearing calm toward open-water neighbours. Select companions with both predation risk and territory in mind, and watch interactions after any new introduction.
