Halloween Hermit Crab

The Halloween Hermit Crab stands out through its orange-and-red leg banding and conspicuous borrowed shell. It searches the substrate and rockwork for algae and food, making it an active animal to watch in a mature marine aquarium.

Feed according to what the aquarium actually provides. Natural algae can be supplemented with dried seaweed, while small portions of marine meaty food broaden its diet. Do not depend on accidental leftovers to sustain it once the aquarium has been cleaned up.

Its shell can become cumbersome around loose corals, so secure frags and unstable decorations. Supply empty replacement shells of appropriate sizes and shapes as the crab grows. A hermit may otherwise kill a snail for its shell, and spare housing does not eliminate the need to watch compatibility.
