Hairtail Snake Blenny

The hairtail snake blenny, Xiphasia setifer, has a long, eel-like body with dark bands and fine coloured markings. Unlike the compact blennies familiar in many reef tanks, it can reach roughly 53 cm and needs a home planned around that length.

Its natural habitat includes soft bottoms and tube-like burrows. Provide suitable substrate and secure, elongated shelters in an established aquarium. Offer small marine crustacean foods and other appropriate meaty preparations, checking feeding as the lights dim because this blenny is most active at night.

Small crustaceans can become prey, so ornamental shrimp require careful consideration. A quiet setting with unobstructed access to its refuge is preferable to crowded rockwork. Do not assume two individuals are a compatible pair; provide separate housing if persistent competition develops around their burrows or food.
