Gem Tang

The gem tang, Zebrasoma gemmatum, has pale spots across a dark body and a contrasting yellow tail. This surgeonfish is an active grazer, and its distinctive appearance comes with the same need for space and sustained nutrition as other large tangs. Adults can approach 23 cm (9 inches), so preserve generous open water around grazing areas.

Maintain extensive rock surfaces for browsing without obstructing swimming lanes. Provide marine algae consistently alongside a varied, balanced diet suitable for tangs. Observe feeding and body condition even when the aquarium appears to contain abundant natural growth.

Other tangs with similar body shapes may be challenged, particularly around feeding areas and established territories. Plan introductions and available refuges before combining them. The sharp spine beside the tail calls for careful containment and handling; avoid situations where the fish can become wedged in narrow décor.
