French Angelfish

The French angelfish, Pomacanthus paru, changes dramatically with age: the yellow bands of a dark juvenile give way to an adult pattern of gold-edged scales. A permanent aquarium should be chosen for the substantial adult fish, not just the juvenile pattern. Reported adult growth reaches about 38 cm (15 inches), with substantial body depth as well as length.

Provide long swimming routes and large rock shelters in an established marine system. Feed marine angelfish foods containing sponge, supplemented with algae-based and meaty preparations. Its browsing around the aquascape is valuable enrichment but does not replace a dependable feeding routine.

Sponges and other attached invertebrates may be eaten, so consider the contents of a reef display before purchase. Similar angelfish can also become territorial rivals. Confirm the available fish's life stage and measurements when judging whether your system has adequate long-term space.
