Flashing Tilefish

The flashing tilefish, Hoplolatilus chlupatyi, is also called the chameleon tilefish because it can change colour rapidly. This ability is part of its biology rather than a guarantee of a particular permanent colour in the aquarium.

Create a quiet, established environment with sandy burrowing areas and stable rock shelters. Leave clear water for swimming, while providing subdued retreats. Offer small marine meaty foods and verify the individual's feeding response; suitable live food may be needed during the transition to prepared meals.

Tilefish are capable jumpers, making a secure cover essential before introduction. Peaceful neighbours help a shy fish emerge and feed. Persistent harassment or feeding competition can leave it hidden, so monitor behaviour closely instead of assuming that an unseen tilefish has settled successfully.
