Flame Scallop

The Flame Scallop is a vivid filter-feeding bivalve that often settles into a sheltered gap among rock and rubble. Its bright mantle and fine tentacles can be striking, but this is a demanding animal with a substantial feeding requirement.

It is non-photosynthetic, so reef lighting cannot replace food. Provide an established system and frequent, carefully managed supplies of suitable suspended microplankton, including phytoplankton. Deliver food upstream so water movement carries it to the scallop instead of blasting concentrated food directly at its tissues.

Long-term success depends on balancing food availability with water quality. A scallop hidden behind rocks may be difficult to monitor or feed adequately. Choose peaceful tankmates, maintain calcium and alkalinity for shell growth, and keep copper treatments away. It is unsuitable as a low-maintenance addition bought simply for color.
