Fimbriated Moray Eel

The fimbriated moray, Gymnothorax fimbriatus, is a spotted predatory eel with yellow around its head. Much of its body may remain hidden during the day, so its aquarium needs to accommodate the whole animal even when only the head is visible. Reported adult length approaches 80 cm (32 inches), even though most of that body may remain concealed.

Build secure caves with firmly supported rock and close every escape route. Offer varied marine meaty foods using a long feeding tool, allowing the eel to take food without competition at its shelter. Its eyesight and feeding response make hand-feeding inappropriate.

Small fish and crustaceans can be eaten. Select substantial companions carefully and avoid treating another eel as an automatic match. Locate the moray before maintenance, keep hands away from its mouth, and plan filtration around the waste generated by a large carnivore.
