Engineer Goby

The engineer goby, Pholidichthys leucotaenia, is an elongated marine fish whose juvenile stripes change markedly as it grows. Its name reflects the burrowing behaviour that can substantially alter the sand around an aquarium's rockwork. An adult can exceed 35 cm (14 inches), so its burrow and the surrounding layout must accommodate a long body.

Set rocks on secure supports before providing sand, rather than balancing them on areas the fish can excavate. Include roomy retreats and enough open floor space for a growing animal. Offer marine meaty foods near the burrow and check that the fish emerges or reaches food reliably.

Choose a community that can accommodate its digging and changing body size. Corals and loose objects near burrow entrances may need repositioning as sand is moved. The juvenile's small size should not determine the permanent tank plan, and interactions with other fish sharing its retreats should be monitored.
