Emperor Angelfish

The emperor angelfish, Pomacanthus imperator, changes from a juvenile pattern of curved pale bands to an adult with horizontal blue and yellow striping. It is a large marine angelfish requiring a permanent aquarium planned for that adult transformation and growth. Reported adult growth reaches about 38 cm (15 inches), making broad swimming routes essential.

Allow broad swimming room around mature rockwork and substantial caves. Feed varied marine angelfish preparations containing sponge, together with algae-based foods and meaty items. Regular meals should complement browsing, with feeding response and body condition checked as the fish settles.

Sponges, corals and other attached invertebrates may be picked at. Other large angelfish can provoke territorial disputes, so assess compatibility before purchase. Ask about the current specimen's size, life stage and accepted foods; the name alone does not establish adult coloration or readiness for a particular aquarium.
