Elongate Dottyback

The elongate dottyback, Pseudochromis elongatus, is a slender fish with reddish-orange and darker body tones. It is well adapted to moving through reef crevices, where its reserved appearance can conceal a determined defence of its chosen territory.

Offer established rockwork with several small caves and clear routes between them. Feed appropriately sized marine meaty foods close enough for the fish to take from cover. Regular observation at meals helps establish whether a hidden resident is eating adequately.

Small crustaceans and other benthic animals may become prey. Similar-shaped fish and timid neighbours can also be harassed around the dottyback's shelter. Choose companions with those behaviours in mind, and do not assume that adding more hiding places will resolve a fundamentally incompatible combination of fish.
