Dusky Wrasse

The dusky wrasse, Halichoeres marginatus, displays intricate blue-green and reddish markings as it develops. It is an active hunter around reef structure, with behaviour shaped as much by suitable shelter and substrate as by open swimming space.

Supply a mature aquarium with rockwork to search and soft sand deep enough for burying. This wrasse retreats into the substrate to rest or escape disturbance. Offer a varied marine meaty diet, and avoid digging around its sleeping area during maintenance.

Small ornamental crustaceans and fanworms may be taken while it forages. Other wrasses require careful assessment for territorial conflict, particularly if they depend on the same area of the tank. Cover the aquarium securely and provide multiple routes to shelter so a startled fish is not trapped in an exposed corner.
