Desjardinii Sailfin Tang

The Desjardinii sailfin tang, Zebrasoma desjardinii, combines tall fins with a detailed pattern of stripes and spots. When assessing space, consider the fish's full body depth and spread fins as well as its length. Adults can approach 41 cm (16 inches) in length, in addition to their considerable fin span.

An established marine aquarium should provide ample turning room, long swimming paths and rock surfaces for browsing. Offer marine seaweed and balanced herbivore preparations consistently, with variety in the feeding routine. Grazing around the display is useful activity, but it does not replace checking that the fish is receiving adequate food.

Other tangs, especially similarly shaped sailfins, may be challenged over territory. Plan shelter and introductions for the adult community rather than the current juvenile sizes. Like other surgeonfish, this species has a sharp tail-base spine that requires careful handling when the fish is moved.
