Dark-striped Squirrelfish

The dark-striped squirrelfish, Sargocentron praslin, is a nocturnal reef fish that shelters during the day and hunts after dark. Its large eyes and striped body suit a display with shaded retreats, rather than one in which every surface is brightly exposed.

Provide rocky caves, overhangs and sufficient open space to turn and move between shelters. Its natural diet includes bottom-dwelling shrimp, crabs and other crustaceans. Offer suitable marine meaty foods where it can find them, including feeding opportunities as the lights dim, and verify that the fish takes prepared meals.

Ornamental crustaceans may become food. Consider feeding competition and leave its daytime refuge undisturbed whenever possible. Squirrelfish have sharp spines and scales, so use care when moving the animal and avoid catching it against abrasive or unstable décor.
