Coral Hogfish

The coral hogfish, Bodianus mesothorax, undergoes a pronounced change from a spotted juvenile to an adult with contrasting front and rear body colours. It is an active, growing predator that needs a permanent home planned beyond its juvenile appearance. Reported adult growth approaches 25 cm (10 inches), well beyond the scale of a small juvenile.

Build a spacious marine aquarium with sturdy rockwork, retreat areas and room to forage near the substrate. Feed a varied diet of suitable marine meaty foods in regular meals. Secure loose décor, and ensure quieter fish can still reach food when the hogfish is feeding enthusiastically.

Small shrimp, crabs and other invertebrates may be taken as prey. Its confidence and territorial tendencies can also create problems for delicate companions. Assess the adult community carefully and do not assume that the word coral in its name establishes suitability for every reef display.
