Coral Hawkfish

The coral hawkfish, Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus, is also called the pixie hawkfish. Its spotted body blends into a rocky setting, where it rests on perches and watches for feeding opportunities rather than hovering continuously in open water.

Create ledges and caves at different levels, leaving routes between them. Feed suitably sized marine meaty foods and observe that the hawkfish receives a meal without dominating every feeding position. Firmly supported décor gives it secure lookout points and shelter.

Small shrimp and very small fish are potential prey. It can also defend favourite areas against nearby residents, so the coral name should not be read as a promise of compatibility with every reef animal. Review ornamental crustaceans and timid bottom-dwelling fish carefully before adding it to the community.
