Convict Tang

The convict tang, Acanthurus triostegus, has a pale body crossed by bold dark bars. It is a grazing surgeonfish that benefits from a mature aquarium with plenty of usable swimming space and surfaces to browse throughout the day. Reported adult growth approaches 20 cm (8 inches); allow clear swimming routes around its grazing areas.

Offer marine algae and appropriate herbivore preparations regularly, supported by a varied marine diet. Natural grazing can be useful but should not be mistaken for guaranteed nutrition. Watch the fish feed and maintain body condition, particularly if several other herbivores share the display.

Arrange rockwork so fish can retreat without blocking the main swimming routes. Other tangs may compete over food or territory, and a natural schooling habit does not make an arbitrary aquarium group compatible. Take care when moving the fish because of the sharp spine near its tail.
