Checkerboard Wrasse

The checkerboard wrasse, Halichoeres hortulanus, develops an intricate adult pattern that differs from its juvenile markings. It is an active forager, so its eventual size and daily movement should shape the aquarium plan from the start.

Allow broad swimming routes, established rockwork and suitable sand deep enough for resting and retreat. Offer a varied marine meaty diet and make sure meals reach the wrasse without overwhelming the filtration. Its sand-burying habit means nighttime maintenance should avoid disturbing the area where it has settled.

Small crustaceans and fanworms may be eaten during its search for food. Other wrasses can face territorial pressure, so do not assume a mixed collection will coexist simply because it has different colours. Secure the aquarium lid and assess the community as the fish grows.
