Chalk Bass

The chalk bass, Serranus tortugarum, is a compact Caribbean basslet with warm body tones and blue markings. It spends time near reef shelter while making short trips into the surrounding water, offering activity without the constant cruising of a large open-water fish.

Provide established rockwork with several crevices and room around them to feed. Offer small marine meaty foods in regular portions, checking that food reaches the fish near its preferred shelter. A varied diet is more useful than expecting it to live on whatever drifts past.

Very small shrimp and crabs can become prey. The chalk bass may also defend space against other fish using the lower rockwork. Plan the number of basslets and their companions around available shelter, and monitor feeding access and chasing after introductions.
