The Caribbean sharpnose puffer, Canthigaster rostrata, is a small toby with a pointed face and fine contrasting markings. Its compact size does not make it a harmless companion for every reef animal: it investigates food with a strong, beak-like mouth.

Provide established rockwork with caves and enough clear room to explore. Feed varied marine meaty items, including appropriate hard-shelled foods that help wear the teeth. Algae may also be grazed, but a planned diet should continue regardless of natural food growth in the tank.

Corals and ornamental invertebrates can be nipped or eaten, and slow fish with tempting fins need particular consideration. Choose a community that suits a puffer's behaviour. Avoid provoking inflation when catching or moving it, and use a suitable container to minimise handling stress.
