Bluefin Damselfish

The bluefin damselfish, Neoglyphidodon melas, changes dramatically as it grows. Its brighter juvenile appearance gives way to a predominantly dark adult, accompanied by territorial behaviour that can make a peaceful mixed community difficult to maintain.

Provide a mature marine aquarium with rock shelters and enough space around them for other fish to avoid confrontation. Feed small portions of marine meaty foods together with algae-based preparations. A fish that grazes around décor still needs a complete, regularly offered diet.

Plan for a single individual unless an experienced aquarist has designed a suitable larger arrangement. Delicate neighbours may struggle, and soft corals can be sampled. Before purchase, consider the adult's behaviour and room requirements rather than assuming the juvenile will remain a small, decorative reef resident.
