Blue Velvet Damselfish

The blue velvet damselfish, Neoglyphidodon oxyodon, is known for the vivid markings of its juvenile stage. Those blue and pale accents tend to diminish as the fish matures into a darker, more forceful territorial resident.

Give it an established marine aquarium with substantial rockwork and clearly separated shelters. Offer balanced marine omnivore foods, combining meaty items with algae-based preparations. The aquarium needs enough room for other residents to feed and travel without constantly passing the damsel's chosen refuge.

This species calls for careful community planning. Shy fish and other small damsels can be relentlessly chased, and soft corals may also be picked at. A colourful juvenile is not evidence of gentle adult behaviour; choose tankmates and a long-term home with that transition in mind.
