Blue Throat Trigger

The blue throat trigger, Xanthichthys auromarginatus, is a substantial marine fish with a grey-brown body and contrasting fin edges. The blue throat marking is associated with males, so the listing name alone should not be treated as a promise of sex or current colour. Adults can exceed 23 cm (9 inches), so plan swimming routes and shelters around a substantial fish.

Provide generous swimming room and sturdy rock caves large enough for the fish to retreat into comfortably. Offer a varied marine meaty diet, including suitable shell-on foods that encourage natural biting. Plan filtration and maintenance around the waste produced by a large carnivore.

Reef compatibility needs individual assessment: a triggerfish's interest in invertebrates and its interactions with other fish cannot be guaranteed. Secure loose décor and review the existing community before introduction. Confirm the available specimen's size and feeding behaviour when planning its permanent home.
